NMC is a Dominant EV Battery Chemistry  

If you’re shopping for a used electric vehicle, one of the most important things to understand is what’s underneath the floor: the battery. One of the dominant lithium-ion battery chemistries used in electric vehicles is Nickel, Manganese, Cobalt NMC.

NMC is also frequently written NCM—Nickel Cobalt Manganese. They refer to the sae three principal cathode metals; manufacturers vary the proportions to optimize cost, range, durability, power and safety.

 

Why EV manufacturers use NMC

Each of NMC’s principal metals performs a different function. Nickel helps increase energy density, which can translate into more driving range without making the battery disproportionately larger. Cobalt contributes stability and corrosion resistance, while manganese improves thermal stability and durability. 

This flexibility has produced variants such as NMC111, NMC622 and NMC811. The numbers indicate the approximate relative proportions of nickel, manganese and cobalt. The industry’s movement toward nickel-rich formulations such as NMC811 is driven partly by the desire for greater energy density and reduced cobalt content.

For drivers, NMC’s biggest advantages include high energy density, strong power output and excellent range potential. These characteristics have made nickel-rich batteries particularly attractive for long-range and premium EVs.

There are tradeoffs. NMC cells generally cost more than lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cells and depend on nickel and cobalt, commodities with cost, sourcing and environmental considerations. Increasing nickel content can also make thermal stability and degradation management more challenging, requiring sophisticated battery-management and thermal-control systems.

 

Who makes NMC batteries?

Major producers include LG Energy Solution⁠, SK On, Samsung SDI and CATL. LG Energy Solution, for example, describes a portfolio ranging from NCM622 and NCM811 to newer NCMA formulations and says increasing nickel content raises energy density. 

 

Which EV manufacturers use NMC?

Nickel-based chemistries are widespread across the EV industry. Tesla has publicly described using NCM and NCA for higher-energy applications, while using LFP for lower-energy applications. Other automakers have used NMC-family cells from LG Energy Solution, SK On, Samsung SDI and CATL.

The industry’s direction is increasingly interesting. Instead of betting on one chemistry, manufacturers are developing multiple battery strategies: high-nickel chemistries for range and performance, and LFP or related chemistries where cost and longevity matter more.

 

What NMC means when buying a used EV

Chemistry is only the beginning. Two identical NMC battery packs can have very different State of Health depending upon age, mileage, temperature exposure, charging patterns, fast-charging history and how much time the battery spent at very high or very low states of charge.

That’s why EV Verified believes a used EV should be evaluated on the actual condition of its battery, not simply its advertised range or odometer reading.
