How EV Battery Health tests work

High-voltage, EV battery health tests begin with a connection to the vehicle’s onboard diagnostic systems. This connection can be physical, through cables connected to vehicle data ports, “over-the-air” via high-speed internet connection, or both. Connections are confirmed, communication is verified, and data is collected. Vehicle data is benchmarked against previously tested, identical models. Battery packs and battery cell-groups within the pack are tested for degradation and the results from a successfully completed test are forwarded via email and stored online for customer  reference. Test results display the percentage of remaining EV battery capacity. This is the State of Health of the EV battery.

TEST TOOLS

OEMs, original equipment manufacturers, provide a list of original, or compatible after-market, tools for out-of-warranty vehicles to licensed auto repair shops and diagnostic service centers like EV VERIFIED. Testing procedures vary by manufacturer and year, make, and model. In some cases, data cables are connected to on-board diagnostic, OBD II, ports to transfer information into diagnostic hardware. EV VERIFIED refers to the OEM manuals and the data bank of more than 800,000 EVs already tested to use the appropriate tools to safely conduct low-voltage tests. The battery is never physically touched. Occasionally, plastic trim panels may be removed to access the vehicle ports.

DATA ACCESS

To access the data from an electric vehicle, technicians use DOIP, data over internet protocol, and proprietary, cloud-based, software programs specific to the make and model being tested. Using DOIP, the vehicle’s on-board computer feeds vehicle data to the analytic program which identifies the make and model by VIN, and then tests vehicle systems to ensure that data hasn’t been corrupted. Once communication and the Battery Management System, BMS, health are confirmed, the data that measures high-voltage electric vehicle battery health is collected and analyzed. This data is then summarized into a report specific to the VIN, stored for future reference, and forwarded electronically. Completed test results for rapid reports are delivered in under ten minutes.

There are two types of EV battery tests to effectively measure remaining EV battery storage capacity. A rapid, mobile test is a fast, stationary, diagnostic check that analyzes battery data in less than 20 minutes and without requiring a test drive.
 

A Premium Test is an in-depth, dynamic diagnostic test that requires the vehicle to be charged to 100% and then driven down to 10% charge (usually within 7 days) to measure live degradation and cell performance. 

The benefit of a Premium Test is better forecasting of future range and degradation based on live degradation and cell performance data collected over several days.

Commercial-grade, EV battery State of Health, SoH, tests measure vehicle communications, sensors, temperature, current, battery management system, the battery pack and battery cell voltages.

High-voltage EV battery State of Health, SoH, is the percentage of remaining battery storage capacity from the 100% it had when it left the factory. This measurement helps to determine remaining range and current value of a used EV. A bad EV battery replacement could cost as much or more than the vehicle sale price. 

High-voltage EV batteries receiving a rapid test should be at 40-80% State of Charge, SoC. Premium Tests require the electric vehicle to be fully charged to 100% before the test commences.
