NCM Battery, Close Cousin to the NMC.

 

NMC, (Nickel, Manganese, Cobalt), batteries are primarily used in long-range and premium electric vehicles like the Tesla Model Y (Long Range versions), Volkswagen ID.4, and Hyundai Ioniq 5. It has more cobalt than manganese but still belongs to the same chemistry family as NMC. 

The cathode combines nickel, cobalt and manganese, and manufacturers can alter their proportions considerably.

 

Understanding the numbers

You may encounter terms such as NCM111, NCM622 and NCM811. These numbers describe the approximate ratio among nickel, cobalt and manganese. As manufacturers have sought higher energy density and lower cobalt content, the industry has progressively developed nickel-richer formulations.

 

LG Energy Solution explains the basic tradeoff clearly: nickel supports higher energy density and range, cobalt contributes stability, and manganese contributes thermal stability and lifespan. 

 

That’s why NCM has been so important to modern EV development. It offers manufacturers considerable freedom to balance range, performance, longevity, safety and cost.

 

Advantages and disadvantages

NCM’s principal benefit is energy density. Packing more usable energy into a given weight and volume is particularly valuable in an EV because a lighter, more compact battery can improve range, acceleration, packaging and efficiency.

 

NCM can also deliver strong power and fast-charging performance when combined with good cell engineering, cooling and battery-management software.

 

Its disadvantages include dependence on relatively expensive nickel and cobalt and greater thermal-management demands compared with LFP. Very high-nickel cathodes can create additional durability challenges, including cracking and capacity loss if not properly engineered.

 

Battery companies are attacking those problems with improved cathode structures, coatings, electrolytes, silicon-enhanced anodes and increasingly sophisticated thermal-management systems. LG Energy Solution, for example, is developing high-voltage mid-nickel NCM as a lower-cost alternative while reserving high-nickel NCMA for demanding performance applications. 

 

Who manufactures NCM?

 

Major manufacturers include LG Energy Solution, Samsung SDI, SK On and CATL.

 

Tesla is particularly instructive because it doesn’t rely on a single chemistry. The company has publicly identified NCM, NCA and LFP as parts of its battery strategy. High-energy applications favor nickel-based chemistry, while lower-energy/cost-sensitive applications can use LFP. 

 

That diversification is increasingly becoming an industry template.

 

Why this matters for used EVs

 

A buyer shouldn’t conclude that one EV is automatically better because it has NCM rather than LFP—or vice versa.

 

The more useful questions are:

 

How healthy is this particular battery today? How much usable capacity remains? Are its cells balanced? Are there diagnostic faults? How has its real-world range changed?

 

Those questions become increasingly important as millions of first-generation EVs enter the used market.
